DHZC goes Boston: Our Second Fellow at Mass General Brigham and the Broad Institute

During the first weeks of his stay, Stefan Hegselmann has gained an overview of the ongoing research projects, established access to the extensive clinical datasets, and defined concrete projects together with his collaborators. At the center of his work is the question of how artificial intelligence can improve care for patients with cardiovascular disease. He is developing methods that use modern large language models to analyze large volumes of unstructured clinical data and medical notes in order to predict important events such as hospital readmission or the onset of cardiac arrhythmias at an early stage. At Mass General Brigham and the Broad Institute, carefully curated cardiovascular datasets are available to him for this purpose. In the longer term, these findings are intended to support personalized, data-driven care at the DHZC as well. Alongside his research, Stefan Hegselmann is using the stay to observe how US centers enable data-driven research and thereby integrate artificial intelligence into everyday clinical cardiology.

Stefan Hegselmann sees the fellowship as a major opportunity for his research. “In Boston, I can combine cutting-edge artificial intelligence research with cardiovascular medicine and contribute to a more data-driven cardiology at the DHZC.”
